Dashboard and switch panels

The dash of a modern vehicle no longer consists of a steering wheel, a speedo, a fuel gauge and a gear stick!

In modern vehicles the ever increasing quantity of electronic systems and controls has turned the dash into an information center, the heart of the vehicle.

The danger lies in information overload. So many systems to monitor - giving vital information to the driver.

Just why is that lamp flashing on the dash?, what is that beeping noise and which signal do you look at first?

Actia's dashboard design team take a "systems analysis" approach to the challenges of designing an effective driver's workplace.

Dashboards in action

Dashboard

Actia have designed dashboards for numerous vehicle manufacturers. We have provided them with an essential part of their vehicle. The dashboard is the drivers "office" and they spend their working lives using it! It is essential that the layout is well designed and planned for ease of use.

The latest generation fully multiplexed bus - the Enviro 300, from UK manufacturer Alexander Dennis Ltd, is fitted with an Actia dashboard system - which is fully interfaced with the Actia Multibus multiplex system.
The ergonomically designed dash has all driver controls within fingertip reach - laid out in an easy to use and understandable way.

The dashboard is the human interface with the bus's integrated multiplex system (that controls and monitors the complete vehicle electrical system.)

Dashboard design

The effective and ergonomic design of a dashboard starts with a blank piece of paper!

We discuss with vehicle manufacturers their dashboard requirements for their new vehicle and then work closely with them to develop and deliver the optimum system.

We often discuss the design with drivers - after all, they are going to be using the systems in the 'real world', their input is essential if the design is to work to optimum performance.

Dashboards are an integral part of our Multibus multiplex system. We have experienced technicians working with manufacturers to develop and improve systems and design to create the most effective dashboard solutions.

Switch panels

Small multiplexed "decoders" (SLUs) are mounted on the back of the switch panel PCB. Each SLU has 16 Inputs/Outputs. The SLU inputs work with momentary or latching switch types.

Swtich Panel

The SLU outputs drive lamps or LEDs in the switches - with day & night time illumination levels..

The two main advantages of multiplexed switch panels are reduced wiring behind the dashboard and rapid diagnostics & fault finding.

Only 4 wires go in and out of the switch panel (regardless of the number of switches) instead of the typical 50-100 wires on a conventionally wired panel - this increases the reliability and reduces the space required behind the panel.

When the PC based diagnostic tool is plugged into the multiplex system, each switch operation & lamp function can be rapidly confirmed and tested.

Actia design engineers work closely with the vehicle manufacturer to ensure that each switch panel design meets the space, functionality and cost requirements of the project.
